White Paper CP971C pH measurement and control in a power utility is an integral part of process. The scrubber efficiency is highlydependent on the pH. Numerous opportunities were revealed for saving time, as well as the cost and materials in power plants. In afossil fuel power plant, the chemical energy stored in coal, oil, natural gas, shale oil, oxygen and air is converted into thermal, mechanical and finally into electrical energy. In other words, water is heated to steam, which spins a steam turbine. The steam turbine drives an electrical generator.

A break you can't afford: new pH sensor eliminates risks of glass breakage
THE RISK of glass breakage during pH measurement using conventional sensors, and its ensuing consequences, is a particularly sensitive issue for the food industry. An enamel electrode, with its robustness, could represent an interesting alternative, but it remains a very costly solution. It cannot be adapted to traditional sensor supports due to its large diameter. Mor resistance to temperature shocks is also problematic. A solution to this problem has arrived from Endress+Hauser, which specialises in high precision measurement systems and automation. The TopHit H CPS401 electrode (right) offers at least a r pH measurement sensor that is free of glass breakage risks.

Glass-free pH-Sensor Wins Innovation Prize
The glass-free pH sensor TopHit from Endress+Hauser has won first prize in the "Equipment and Process" category of the "Innovation Trophies" competition. The prize was awarded by a jury of experts from the agriculture and food industries and by the specialist press on the occasion of the CFIA in Rennes, France.
